Sea and Coastal Plus Licence
All licences – Sea (offshore) and Coastal Plus – consist of a theoretical part and a practical part (training course), which are payable separately. For anyone who has never sailed on a sailing yacht, an introductory sailing course is strongly recommended. A first course will be organised over the weekend of 19–20 September 2026, departing from Bruinisse in Zeeland (Netherlands), and the candidate will receive the FLV Certificate A.
As soon as the database of exam questions has been approved in English by the authorities, we will be able to offer a course in English. We hope this will be the case by autumn.
The offshore Sea Licence is mandatory for operating:
-
a pleasure craft or vessel up to 24 m in maritime waters, without any limitation of navigation area.
-
Minimum age: 16 years on the day of the examination (parental authorisation required for minors).
The offshore licence allows the operation of sailing and/or motor vessels.
The Coastal PLUS licence, introduced by Grand-Ducal Regulation of 8 March 2017, authorises its holder to operate a pleasure craft or vessel of up to 20 metres in maritime waters up to 6 nautical miles from the coast. Minimum age: 16 years on the day of the examination (parental authorisation required for minors). The practical training course is the same as for the offshore licence (one-week training course on a cruising sailing yacht).
The session will start in October 2026. To register, click here. The courses for both licences share a common core syllabus. The language of instruction is English. Courses will take place at: Lycée de Garçons 41A, avenue Victor Hugo L-1750 Luxembourg
according to the following schedule:
-
Tuesday, 20 October 2026: 18:30–21:00
(only the first lesson starts at 18:30 – distribution of materials) -
Tuesday, 27 October 2026: 19:00–21:00, and then every Tuesday from 19:00 to 21:00
(except during school holidays)
In addition, two Saturday morning sessions will be held: 24 October 2026 and 28 November 2026, from 09:00 to 12:00. The chartwork examination will take place on a day in March 2027 (to be confirmed) from 19:00 to 21:00. For the 2026–2027 course calendar, click here. The number of registrations per course is limited.
Attention: The organiser reserves the right to split courses as indicated in the calendar or to deliver the course in hybrid format (in-person and videoconference).

Regatta.lu 2026
For its 11th edition in 2026, Regatta.lu continues with the competition format featuring two separate classes for university students and secondary school students. University students (University class) will sail exclusively on race-cruiser type yachts, while secondary school students (High School class) will sail on cruising yachts, allowing crews to be introduced to the pleasures of sailing.
Skippers and co-skippers may also be students, and the organisers particularly encourage any young sailor with the required qualifications and experience to take the lead of their crew by becoming skipper or co-skipper. Interested students will find the relevant information below. If they have not yet participated in these roles at Regatta.lu, they are invited to express their interest by email at
The two-class racing format will provide four full days of racing, with races counting towards the final overall ranking of the competition. This format will enhance the quality of the event and enable everyone—skippers, co-skippers and crew members alike—to further develop their sailing skills. Videoclip Youtube.
